Clay Basket Weaving: Honoring the Hands of Women
Long before pottery wheels and modern tools, women across the world gathered grasses, reeds, roots, and fibers and wove them into vessels for carrying water, food, seeds, and babies. Basket weaving is one of the oldest art forms in human history — older even than fired clay. It was survival. It was ceremony. It was community.
Knowledge was passed hand to hand, mother to daughter, auntie to niece. Patterns held stories. Techniques carried lineage. Every basket was both practical and symbolic — a reminder that women have always been the keepers of nourishment, culture, and continuity.
In this workshop, we honor that legacy by translating the ancient language of weaving into clay. Using coil and texture techniques, we will sculpt ceramic baskets that echo traditional forms while holding our own modern stories. Each piece becomes a vessel — not just for objects,…
